large group team development

"Following a large group event run by Liberating Potential to help change the culture of a new business area, an operator identified a way to increase productivity on his site by resetting the machinery. This did actually work and made a difference to the bottom line."
Training Manager

A large government agency needed support with a new business unit. The team of 60 people had been formed through the merger of several previously independent districts. They had traditionally been managed in a command and control style and there were a lot of tensions between people in the districts and the new management structure. The members of the team were spread across a large geographic area, which made communications difficult. Our brief was to establish a strong team identity and an all-inclusive culture – with every member taking responsibility for the whole and contributing to decision-making.

Liberating Potential designed and ran a large group event over two days. This involved the team in decision-making about the future of the unit – creating an operating framework – and team development work to improve relationships. Key aspects of the approach we adopted were:

  • Understanding the business, including site visits
  • Involving the management and wider team in identifying the key issues and success criteria
  • Involving a cross section of team members in contributing to and facilitating the event, which required pre event training/briefing
  • Involving the senior leadership of the authority – the Chief Executive and Regional Director – in the event

At a follow-up event the team rated themselves highly on team identity and reported progress in the area of inclusiveness.
