A large multinational firm called us in to help with a relationship difficulty they had with their sole reseller in South Africa. The original alliance had been a marriage of convenience over a major contract. After two years of drift there were problems around strategic direction, the quality of systems and processes and relationships due to the build up of negative feelings. Close to breakdown, there was an annual $70million worth of business at stake.

What we did was:

  • Coach the Africa Business Manager to help with the resolution of the problems.
  • Design and facilitate a meeting in South Africa between the two organisations. This involved providing a robust process, conflict management and support with dialogue skills.

The outcomes were:

  • Actions to deal with existing operational problems
  • Preservation of the existing business
  • A joint business plan
  • Agreement on a framework to discuss future strategy and business models
  • A follow-up review meeting in the UK showed significantly improved relationships and trust.
